Daddy Dolphins

Thanks to our Maui Dolphin Dads for sharing this morning's activities with us. It was fantastic to have you join us in class to code with Mindstorms; investigate the physics of flight with paper planes and to test your basketball skills in a few friendly games. We also loved our new hats!!!

Floaty McFloatface

Our STEM challenge today involved making metal float.

We discussed properties of metals and liquids, then predicted whether coins would float or sink. We tried dropping them into water from different heights; on their flat surfaces and their edges....but, in each case, the coins sank.

We repeated this process with aluminium foil and that sank too.......

How, then, could we possibly combine coins and foil to make them float?

Keeping the foil flat worked to carry 5 coins

Flat foil flooded easily

Steep sides prevented water entering

Distributing the weight evenly helped

There was a lot of discussion

Beautiful Views

Continuing our theme of Landscapes, we have been painting enlarged landscape details on our classroom windows. Instead of looking at today's rain, we were dreaming of beautiful blue skies, surfing, mountains and hibiscus flowers.

Robot Invasion

The Maui Dolphins had great fun building lego robots. Over the coming weeks, we will be programming them to do all sorts of things. Watch this space....
